Survey Suggests Back-To-School Sales Up 6%

A recent poll conducted for the National Retail Federation (NRF) from June 30 through July 7 showed that consumers may spend more than $19 billion on computers and other consumer electronics during the Back-to-School 2010 season. This represents a 6 percent increase compared to last year according to the survey results.

Survey highlights:
  • For grade-schoolers, sales could increase as much as 20 percent with parents spending $6.4 billion or an average of $181.61 per household
  • College-bound spending is expected to be flat when compared to last summer but still nearly twice the grade-school expenditures at $13 billion or $ $236.94 per student when including cell phones, personal media players, digital cameras and accessories
When combining consumer electronics and all other merchandise, back-to-school spending is projected to jump 16 percent to $55.1 billion this year, making this seasonal shopping event the second biggest US retail spending occasion behind the winter holidays.

Accessories Expeditures Will Increase

According to a recent study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the consumer electronics industry is projected to generate $165.3 billion in shipment sales in 2010. Of that amount, accessories including batteries will account for over $14 billion or 9 percent of the industry total. Accessories growth is forecasted on cleaning products, notebook and netbook cases and surge protectors emphasizing current economic realities that consumers remain focused on products that protect, personalize and increase the performance of existing electronic assets.

“The accessories market, which historically was unheralded and underestimated before showing its power as a margin maker in recent years, is a major revenue contributor to the consumer electronics industry,” says Sean Murphy, Senior Account manager, Market Research, CEA.

Key findings in
the CEA research reveal:
  • Consumers plan to spend on average $409 on accessories in 2010 up 5 percent from the previous year
  • 61% of online consumers shopped for accessories in the past year and more than half purchased items
  • The majority of accessory purchases are made at brick and mortar retailers compared to online retailers
The accessories market will continue to be favorably influenced by the emergence of new products such as digital readers from Sony and Amazon’s Kindle, iPads, portable computers and other mobile devices. Any sustained economic improvement will also help to boost accessory purchases at or soon following the initial purchase. Resellers worldwide can attract new buyers and build retail shopping traffic with these high-potential, high-margin generators.

Nearly 161 billion gigabytes of digital media was generated worldwide in 2006 and it’s forecast to grow more than 600 percent this year. How big is this digital universe? By 2010, the stack of books could reach from the sun to Pluto and back. In 2006, those books would represent 6 tons of books for every man, woman and child on Earth. That’s a lot of content.

Gartner Forecasts PC Shipments to Increase in 2010

Recent Gartner projections show that worldwide PC shipments could reach more than 366 million units in 2010 up 19.7% from the nearly 306 million units shipped in 2009. All regional markets should return to growth in 2010. Unit increases will continue to expand strongly over the next few years as home PC demand improves and professional replacements begin to recover.

"The PC industry will be overwhelmingly driven by mobile PCs thanks to strong home growth in both emerging and mature markets," said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. "Mini-notebooks are again forecast to boost mobile PC growth in 2010 but their contribution is expected to decline noticeably afterward as they face growing competition from new ultra-low-voltage (ULV) ultraportables and next generation tablets. Desk-based PC shipment growth will be minimal and limited to emerging markets.” Mobile PCs are expected to drive 90% of PC growth over the next three years compared to 55% in 2009.

Taking Better Digital Photos is a Snap

According to the NPD Group, a global provider of consumer and retail market research, nearly 75% of American households own a digital camera but most users have little or no photography experience or training. Here are a few tips for helping customers improve digital photographs:
  1. Don’t miss the “moment.” Some cameras, particularly point-and-shoot models can be a little slow to capture the image. Autofocus and automatic exposure settings can delay the shutter. Try decreasing the delay by holding the settings. For example, aim the camera and press the shutter button halfway to set the focus and exposure then fully press the button when the subject enters the frame.
  2. Get a little closer. When photographing family and friends with landmarks, it’s probably necessary that people appear distant, after all, it’s the background that’s the focal point. When the landscape isn’t the center of attention, use the camera’s zoom feature to get closer to the subject. A photo partly or largely composed of the subject is more compelling than a photo of someone far away with a living room or parking lot surrounding them.
  3. Come down a level. When photographing pets, children or people, lower the camera’s position to a level more consistent with the subject. The result is a more personal and natural perspective.
  4. Three is not a crowd. Many photographers use the Rule of Thirds when composing a photograph. It should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. Proponents claim that this technique creates more interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.
  5. Back it up. Not long ago, people anguished over the loss of photographs due to flood, fire or storm. Today a personal computer hard-drive failure is all that’s needed to erase years of memories. Backup or copy digital photographs to an external hard-drive or other format to protect from loss. Some drive enclosures feature one-touch copy to easily transfer picture files.

IDC Predictions for 2010 PC Market

According to Bob O’Donnell, International Data Corporation (IDC) program vice president, Clients and Displays, many of the 2009 worldwide PC market trends will continue their influence in 2010. IDC expects that the lower price points shaped by last year’s economy will create new opportunities for ultrathin portables, all-in-one desktops and other form factors.

IDC "Top 10" PC Industry Predictions for 2010:

  1. Ultrathins will be less than 5% of total portable PC shipments.
  2. Growth of netbook shipments will significantly slow and plateau.
  3. Declines of average selling price (ASP) will slow dramatically.
  4. Embedded WiMAX will surpass 3G cellular in portable PCs shipments.
  5. Share of all-in-one desktops will double.
  6. Portable PCs will account for 60% of all PC shipments.
  7. 10% of new enterprise desktop client deployments will be virtual.
  8. Touch-enabled portable and desktop PCs will gain little traction.
  9. Apple iPad will not encourage Windows-based Tablet PCs sales.
  10. DVD will remain the dominant optical drive type in PCs.

PriceGrabber Survey Reports Netbook Ownership Increasing

In a TWICE article written by Doug Olenick, an annual netbook survey conducted by the price-comparison Web site PriceGrabber.com found that netbook ownership is increasing. The survey of 1,680 online consumers taken in January 2010 found netbook ownership had increased to 15 percent up from 10 percent in 2009. Eleven percent of those who do not own a netbook plan to purchase one this year, the report stated.

The survey was revealed that 65 percent of respondents said they would not spend more then $750 on their next computing device despite that the majority had spent more than that on their last computer purchase. Most owners of the ultra-portable personal computers do not consider netbooks to be a direct replacement for a traditional notebook computer or laptop with 63 percent describing a netbook as an "additional computing device for use on the go." Finally, the primary age group now buying netbooks has shifted
from 35- to 54-year-olds to 45- to 64-year-olds.

Tell It Like It Is

Signs are a reseller’s “silent salesmen,” continuously delivering messages and helping convey the image, voice and tone of the entire store. When properly applied, signage and graphics can educate and communicate with customers, identify brands and products, announce promotions and direct retail traffic flows within the store. Customers look for signage to orient themselves, get assistance, locate merchandise and, most importantly, find where to pay. Signs should exhibit a uniform level of quality and appearance that enhances the overall presentation of the product. Remember that both the message and how it is conveyed are important: It only takes a few poorly executed signs to diminish a message’s overall impact.

MANHATTAN Retail Tips:

  • Place messages and reminders near product displays and points of purchase to stimulate impulse buys and generate additional profits
  • Highlight new technology and popular features or suggest alternative uses that might not be obvious by reviewing the product or packaging alone
  • Avoid handwritten signs – use a computer with a quality printer and design a template for consistency with simple, direct messages, colorful images and legible fonts
  • Keep signage fresh, replace it when necessary and use clear acrylic holders or easels to create a focal point and give messages prominence
