Gartner Forecasts PC Shipments to Increase in 2010

Recent Gartner projections show that worldwide PC shipments could reach more than 366 million units in 2010 up 19.7% from the nearly 306 million units shipped in 2009. All regional markets should return to growth in 2010. Unit increases will continue to expand strongly over the next few years as home PC demand improves and professional replacements begin to recover.

"The PC industry will be overwhelmingly driven by mobile PCs thanks to strong home growth in both emerging and mature markets," said George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. "Mini-notebooks are again forecast to boost mobile PC growth in 2010 but their contribution is expected to decline noticeably afterward as they face growing competition from new ultra-low-voltage (ULV) ultraportables and next generation tablets. Desk-based PC shipment growth will be minimal and limited to emerging markets.” Mobile PCs are expected to drive 90% of PC growth over the next three years compared to 55% in 2009.

Taking Better Digital Photos is a Snap

According to the NPD Group, a global provider of consumer and retail market research, nearly 75% of American households own a digital camera but most users have little or no photography experience or training. Here are a few tips for helping customers improve digital photographs:
  1. Don’t miss the “moment.” Some cameras, particularly point-and-shoot models can be a little slow to capture the image. Autofocus and automatic exposure settings can delay the shutter. Try decreasing the delay by holding the settings. For example, aim the camera and press the shutter button halfway to set the focus and exposure then fully press the button when the subject enters the frame.
  2. Get a little closer. When photographing family and friends with landmarks, it’s probably necessary that people appear distant, after all, it’s the background that’s the focal point. When the landscape isn’t the center of attention, use the camera’s zoom feature to get closer to the subject. A photo partly or largely composed of the subject is more compelling than a photo of someone far away with a living room or parking lot surrounding them.
  3. Come down a level. When photographing pets, children or people, lower the camera’s position to a level more consistent with the subject. The result is a more personal and natural perspective.
  4. Three is not a crowd. Many photographers use the Rule of Thirds when composing a photograph. It should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally-spaced horizontal lines and two equally-spaced vertical lines. Proponents claim that this technique creates more interest in the composition than simply centering the subject.
  5. Back it up. Not long ago, people anguished over the loss of photographs due to flood, fire or storm. Today a personal computer hard-drive failure is all that’s needed to erase years of memories. Backup or copy digital photographs to an external hard-drive or other format to protect from loss. Some drive enclosures feature one-touch copy to easily transfer picture files.

IDC Predictions for 2010 PC Market

According to Bob O’Donnell, International Data Corporation (IDC) program vice president, Clients and Displays, many of the 2009 worldwide PC market trends will continue their influence in 2010. IDC expects that the lower price points shaped by last year’s economy will create new opportunities for ultrathin portables, all-in-one desktops and other form factors.

IDC "Top 10" PC Industry Predictions for 2010:

  1. Ultrathins will be less than 5% of total portable PC shipments.
  2. Growth of netbook shipments will significantly slow and plateau.
  3. Declines of average selling price (ASP) will slow dramatically.
  4. Embedded WiMAX will surpass 3G cellular in portable PCs shipments.
  5. Share of all-in-one desktops will double.
  6. Portable PCs will account for 60% of all PC shipments.
  7. 10% of new enterprise desktop client deployments will be virtual.
  8. Touch-enabled portable and desktop PCs will gain little traction.
  9. Apple iPad will not encourage Windows-based Tablet PCs sales.
  10. DVD will remain the dominant optical drive type in PCs.
