IDC Predictions for 2010 PC Market

According to Bob O’Donnell, International Data Corporation (IDC) program vice president, Clients and Displays, many of the 2009 worldwide PC market trends will continue their influence in 2010. IDC expects that the lower price points shaped by last year’s economy will create new opportunities for ultrathin portables, all-in-one desktops and other form factors.

IDC "Top 10" PC Industry Predictions for 2010:

  1. Ultrathins will be less than 5% of total portable PC shipments.
  2. Growth of netbook shipments will significantly slow and plateau.
  3. Declines of average selling price (ASP) will slow dramatically.
  4. Embedded WiMAX will surpass 3G cellular in portable PCs shipments.
  5. Share of all-in-one desktops will double.
  6. Portable PCs will account for 60% of all PC shipments.
  7. 10% of new enterprise desktop client deployments will be virtual.
  8. Touch-enabled portable and desktop PCs will gain little traction.
  9. Apple iPad will not encourage Windows-based Tablet PCs sales.
  10. DVD will remain the dominant optical drive type in PCs.
