Digital Content Forecast to Reach 988 Billion Gigabytes in 2010

Nearly 161 billion gigabytes of digital media was generated worldwide in 2006 and it’s forecast to grow more than 600 percent this year. How big is this digital universe? According to a white paper sponsored by International Data Corporation (IDC) and EMC, in 2006 it would amount to 12 stacks of books extending from the Earth to the sun or a stack of books twice around the Earth’s orbit. By 2010, the stack of books could reach from the sun to Pluto and back. In 2006, those books would represent 6 tons of books for every man, woman and child on Earth. That’s a lot of content.
