Accessories Expeditures Will Increase

According to a recent study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the consumer electronics industry is projected to generate $165.3 billion in shipment sales in 2010. Of that amount, accessories including batteries will account for over $14 billion or 9 percent of the industry total. Accessories growth is forecasted on cleaning products, notebook and netbook cases and surge protectors emphasizing current economic realities that consumers remain focused on products that protect, personalize and increase the performance of existing electronic assets.

“The accessories market, which historically was unheralded and underestimated before showing its power as a margin maker in recent years, is a major revenue contributor to the consumer electronics industry,” says Sean Murphy, Senior Account manager, Market Research, CEA.

Key findings in
the CEA research reveal:
  • Consumers plan to spend on average $409 on accessories in 2010 up 5 percent from the previous year
  • 61% of online consumers shopped for accessories in the past year and more than half purchased items
  • The majority of accessory purchases are made at brick and mortar retailers compared to online retailers
The accessories market will continue to be favorably influenced by the emergence of new products such as digital readers from Sony and Amazon’s Kindle, iPads, portable computers and other mobile devices. Any sustained economic improvement will also help to boost accessory purchases at or soon following the initial purchase. Resellers worldwide can attract new buyers and build retail shopping traffic with these high-potential, high-margin generators.
