Survey Suggests Back-To-School Sales Up 6%

A recent poll conducted for the National Retail Federation (NRF) from June 30 through July 7 showed that consumers may spend more than $19 billion on computers and other consumer electronics during the Back-to-School 2010 season. This represents a 6 percent increase compared to last year according to the survey results.

Survey highlights:
  • For grade-schoolers, sales could increase as much as 20 percent with parents spending $6.4 billion or an average of $181.61 per household
  • College-bound spending is expected to be flat when compared to last summer but still nearly twice the grade-school expenditures at $13 billion or $ $236.94 per student when including cell phones, personal media players, digital cameras and accessories
When combining consumer electronics and all other merchandise, back-to-school spending is projected to jump 16 percent to $55.1 billion this year, making this seasonal shopping event the second biggest US retail spending occasion behind the winter holidays.
